Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Syria - Statement by Turkey

Mehmet Ferden ÇARIKÇI 31.10.2016

Mr. President,

We categorically reject baseless allegations made by the Syrian regime in its UPR report in toto. We condemn such deliberate and useless attempts to distort reality.

The crisis in Syria has entered its sixth year and the suffering of the Syrian people has reached levels beyond imagination. The Syrian people are besieged, starving, denied of health services and other basic needs; they are deliberately and indiscriminately attacked, tortured and ill-treated.

The entire world knows the obvious. The regime is the main responsible for the horrific situation all-over Syria. The heinous acts by the regime have caused lives of hundreds of thousands of Syrian people and led to the displacement of other millions. The regime has to be held accountable for its crimes against humanity.

Thus, Turkey recommends the following:

1. Stop violating international human rights and humanitarian law.

2. Respect the right to life and stop killing your own people.

3. Stop the systematic ill-treatment and torture.

4. Stop using chemical weapons.

5. Stop collaborating with DAESH, Al-Nusrah Front and other terrorist organisations.

Last but not least, that the Syrian regime is still allowed to occupy a seat in the UN is an utter disgrace to the universal norms and values upheld by the international community.

I thank you, Mr. President.
