Statement by Turkey, Ambassador Naci Koru, Permanent Representative, 37th Session of the Human Rights Council, Urgent Debate on The deteriorating situation of human rights in Eastern Ghouta
Naci KORU
02.03.2018
Mr. President,
The worsening humanitarian situation in Eastern Ghouta is a serious cause of concern, which unfortunately made us convene here today at an urgent debate. The siege applied by the regime in civilian areas is unacceptable.
Turkey does support the resolution reflecting the deteriorating situation in Eastern Ghouta as submitted. We hope that the adoption of this resolution will amplify the call made by the international community through UNSC Resolution 2401, which Turkey also welcomed.
From the very beginning, we have contributed to all efforts for the de-escalation and cessation of the conflict in Syria and the establishment of a comprehensive ceasefire.
We have also reiterated our concerns due to the increase in regime’s violations and the worsening humanitarian situation, in our contacts with the guarantors of the regime.
In that regard, our President has raised the dire humanitarian situation in Eastern Ghouta on several occasions with the Russian President.
I would like to underline that we stand ready to treat the critically ill and wounded civilians in Turkey. We will continue to extend humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people and support the efforts of the international community and the UN.
Finally, we will maintain efforts to end the conflict that lies at the core of the humanitarian crisis in Syria by a credible political solution.
I thank you.
