STATEMENT BY TURKEY, 37. HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL, GENERAL DEBATE ITEM 3

Naci KORU 09.03.2018
Mr. President,
Bearing in mind that we celebrated International Women’s Day yesterday, we welcome, the “Summary Report of the annual full day of discussion on women’s human rights” of the OHCHR.
Turkey sets herself the goal to develop women’s life standards and rights; to enhance their participation in politics, decision-making mechanisms and employment; to empower their social status; and to eliminate completely all kind of violence against women and girls.
As such, comprehensive work has been conducted in Turkey, in all fields such as education, health, professional life and political representation in recent years.
In the same way, Turkey has recently assumed a pioneering role for efforts in preparing the “Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence” which, in short is referred to as the İstanbul Convention and has become the first country to ratify it. The Convention remains the most far-reaching international treaty to tackle violence against women.
Mr. President,
I would like to also stress that we remain deeply concerned by the blockade imposed on Qatar and the various negative effects it has on the Qatari people.
We call upon the countries in the region to engage in constructive dialogue for a swift and durable solution of this problem.
Thank you.

Atatürk
